Conversational Effectiveness

5 Steps of effective communication:

1) You demonstrate that you understand the problem and that your partner's feelings are legitimate and justified.

2) You acknowledge you responsibility.

3) You acknowledge your own displeasure at what you did.

4) You make it clear that your misdeed will never happen again.

5) You make an apology; you express your regret and maybe ask for forgiveness depending on the situation.

Leadership

There are 3 different styles of leader...
1) Laissez-faire: they take no initiative in directiong courses of action and neither compliments nor criticizes the group memeber's of their progress.

2) Democratic: provides direction but allows group to progress on their own.  They contribute suggestions and provide comments on memeber and group performance.

3) Authoritarian: determines group policies and makes decisions without consulting other members of the group.  They are highly concerned with getting the group to acccept his or her decisions rather than its own.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a very productive leader.  He got people to listen to him and he didn't even use any violence.  This is a characteristic of a good leader.  They look out for the well-being of an entire population instead of their own.  I think that he was a democratic leader because he provided a direction for the civil rights movement but he encouraged people to go out and do their own thing as well.
An example of a good leader is Stalin, who used it for bad.  While he was successful in industrializing the Soviet Union in under 10 years, the way he went about it was completely uncivilized.  He is an example of an authoritarian leader.  He believed that he had the only say in all the decisions and people who did not agree would be executed.  This lead to the Purges of the Soviet Union and millions of civilians dead.

Martin Luther King Jr. definately succeeded because without his help, America would not be where it is today in terms of the civil rights movement.  Who knows, we could have segregation in public services today if not for MLK.  If I could change one thing about his leadership style, it would be to keep his personal life out of his work as a social activist.  He was caught multiple time having affairs and sexually assaulting women.
I think that Stalin was definitely a successful leader.  While not a good person, he used his authoritative and militarian power to persuade a lot of people to do what he wanted.  If I could change one thing about his leadership style, it would be to have more morals and to not kill people because they didn't believe what he wanted them to believe.

Never Enough Time for Sentimentality

When was the last time that you sent out a LETTER(not an email, call, or text but an actual letter) to someone, just to let them know that you are thinking of them?

I have been wanting to do this for weeks, yet I have never gotten around to doing it yet...Until now.
FINALLY I have written a letter to my family.

                                                        HERE IS A PICTURE!!

I challenge you all to send a letter to someone that you haven't seen in a while.  It will probably make their day and it will make you feel good too.

Cheers

DISCONFIRMATION AND CONFIRMATION
Disconfirmation is a type of communication in which we ignore someone's presence.  It is similar to saying that a person and what they have to say are not worth serious attention or effort; they are insignificant and we should spend time worrying about them.

Conversation with a friend!

Today, I had a lovely conversation with me friend, Leah.  The conversation displayed all of the converational parts for an effective conversation.  It started out with an opening statement of Hi, how are you? Then there is some light conversation, then it gets down to business, generally a question.  Then the other person responds to the question.  Then there is a closing statement of See you later!
Here is how it went down, enjoy!
logara: Hi! How are you?

me: Hi! I am good, how are you?

logara: I'm good. Just got done with class for the day. Are you liking all of this snow?

me: I like it a lot but not walking in it. Are you excited for Christmas?

logara: I am SO ready for Christmas. Hey, have you completed any of the blogs for our Human Communications course?

me: So am I! Why yes I have completely some blogs for our Human Communications class. I still have a few to do though.

logara: Me too! I was wondering if you would like to work on them together and save a ton of time?

me: That sounds like a good idea!

Effective Conversation

Have you ever had a really really good conversation with someone and you never wanted it to end?

Well the other day, I was having a conversation over the phone with my good friend Dan and it was just the best conversation.  We just talked about random stuff that was happening in our lives but I think that made it good was that it was a two sided conversation.  It wasn't just one person talking and the other person continually saying "Yep. Yep. Cool. Yep."  We both asked questions and this made it seemed like we actually cared about what the other person had to say.  I like it when people seem interested in what I have to say, It is a major self-esteem booster.  Another reason why I liked the conversation is that it was very intelligent and thought-provoking.  Sometimes you just need to have very deep conversations with someone and not just talk about vain stuff, like the majority of people now-a-days do.  It really got me thinking and I enjoyed every moment of mine and Dan's conversation.

Another thing I was thinking about the other day is those diclaimers seen on tv and other forms of media.  One in particular are those infomercial diclaimers at the beginning and the end that go somewhat like this :" The following is a paid advertisement.  The views and opinions do not necessarily represent the views of this tv station".  This disclaimer is used at both the beginning and the end of every paid program on tv.  It is used to show that the tv station does not endorse any of the prodeucts and that they cannot be liable for any false/incorrect information or products sold in the infomercial.  I think that this disclaimer works but only to some etent.  Most people watching infomercials don't even pay much attention to this disclaimer simply because it is annoying and not very memorable.
